Reading all the threads about the Garmin makes me wonder if I need to get the GPS in addition to our phone? If I was you i'd take a paper map too, the signal probably wont be that good to rely on mobile. Not sure what the iphone apps go on but its probably a 3g or 4g signal and maps can take ages to load. It's fairly widely available in most bookstores and large newsagents in Ireland. I am going to copy here a reply I left to another recent question about cell phones in Ireland. See comments below for charges. My old GPS was ancient so it would not have made sense to buy the map upgrade. We found the GPS very helpful.
